Over 400,000 individuals in the United States have Down syndrome (DS) and are living with the significant challenges of cognitive and visual deficits, both of which pose serious threats to the maximum potential of these individuals. Improving visual health remains the primary mission of the National Eye Institute, and becomes particularly critical when the affected individuals cannot advocate for themselves, such as is the case for persons with DS. This proposal aims to test new objective spectacle prescribing strategies to provide substantial improvements in visual quality for individuals with DS which is ultimately anticipated to facilitate their performance of visually demanding activities of daily living and foster greater independence.
